Leaving oil in the ground to fight climate change

db34bb17287e4a87a4f19e6256ea1e0e A new initiative to fight climate change and conserve forests by leaving oil in the ground has taken off in Ecuador , which hopes that other countries will contribute to a fund and share the costs of forgoing oil revenues. Martin Khor WHAT would a country's leaders do if oil reserves were discovered beneath the tropical rainforests of that nation's premier national park? The government would naturally be in a dilemma. If the forests are destroyed to extract the oil, the country and the world would lose the national park and its biodiversity-rich forest. Moreover, the extraction and use of the oil would release a lot of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, contributing to climate change. But if the oil were to be left in the ground in order to protect the forests and avoid emissions, the country would lose a lot of export earnings and state revenues that could be used for development. Economists call this an opportunity cost. Given the dominant p...

The Myth of Natural

9a4a08aea899474caf5a787d0b7cf797 Article from Organic Consumers Association Corporate Takeovers & Monopolistic Practices The $25 Billion organic marketplace has enjoyed substantial growth for over a decade, thanks to growing consumer consciousness and farmer innovation. No longer a passing trend or simply a niche market, organic food and farming are proving to be a viable alternative to the unhealthy, unsustainable and unjust conventional food system. Unprecedented wholesale and retail control of the organic marketplace by UNFI and Whole Foods, employing a business model of selling twice as much so-called "natural" food as certified organic food, coupled with the  takeover of many organic companies by multinational food corporations such as Dean Foods, threatens the growth of the organic movement. Perpetrating "Natural" Fraud Consumers are confused about the difference between conventional products marketed as "natural," and those nutritionally and env...

Farmers Not Invited to Food Summit?

22d0ac6b534a4417929c75e3feaa6943 by Sabina Zaccaro ROME - World farmers are not part of the official delegations at the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) food summit on food security that opened here Monday. But they came anyhow to express their views, since, they say, it is their communities that are most impacted by the food crisis. Activists from the International Peasant Movement (La Via Campesina) take part in a demonstration outside the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) headquarters in Rome November 16, 2009. (REUTERS/Giampiero Sposito) Small-scale producers from the Amazonian rainforest, from Africa, the Pacific islands and the Himalayas gathered in Rome for the Peoples' Food Sovereignty Forum (Nov. 13-17), held in parallel to the FAO meetings, to discuss the serious effects of the crisis in their communities. Small farmers and other small food producers number more than 1.5 billion in the world, the civil society forum estimates. "They produce more than...

Could Bison be the Ethical, Eco-Friendly Beef Alternative?

Once upon a time, 75 million bison roamed the western plains of North America. This was in the mid-1800s, when they outnumbered the humans 25 to one. Early settlers reported a carpet of bison as far as the eye could see. When Sitting Bull, the great Sioux chief, left Canada to surrender to the U.S. Army in 1881, he rode through a single herd for nine days, without interruption. Bison seemed like perfect animals. The Hidatsa Indians had names for 27 cuts of bison meat. In a hurry, you could eat a bison's liver warm, seasoned with bile from the gallbladder. Women sliced the meat thin, dried it, ground it and mixed it with saskatoon berries to make pemmican for winter. The Assiniboine boiled bison blood and brains with rosebuds and hide scrapings, while the Comanche liked the partially curdled milk from the stomachs of young calves, an early form of yogurt. Tribes stored fat in bison bladders the size of a human head. The meat was famously lean - less than a fifth of the fat of beef, ...
