Edible Landscaping!

Thinking Beyond "Green" to Truly Sustainable By Joel Salatin  Acres USA, June 2011  Straight to the Source : http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_23438.cfm As the imperative for developing ecologically-regenerative food and farming systems penetrates deeper into our culture's collective psyche, even college administrators are asking: "What does an eco-college look like?" Almost every institution, from corporate to academic, now has some sort of sustainability director. The person hired for this position is supposed to help the organization become more eco-friendly, or at least promote a semblance of green-think. Raising institutional awareness about water usage, natural light, living roofs, local food sourcing and the type of napkins used, these staff members are an impressively persistent lot, often challenging entrenched ways of doing things. In the last couple of years, I've been asked more and more, as part of a day's speaking en...

What happens to your body after you drink a soda every day, for a long time

Sugar rushes and caffeine highs followed by a depressing energy crash are  what happens to your body if you drink a soda right now , but plenty of Blisstree readers actually seem to be okay with that. Some of you think it’s alarmist to compare a caffeine and sugar rush to doing drugs, and some just don’t really care about the slump they’ll find themselves in after drinking 39 grams of sugar, but what makes us really worried about a soda-slurping habit is what happens over the long term. Here’s a quick snapshot of you, in a few years, after drinking soda on a regular basis: You’ll Be Fatter:  According to research in the  Nurse’s Health Study , which monitored the health of 90,000 women for eight years, drinking a single soda every day of the week added 10 pounds over a four-year period. The 50 Best Cookie Recipes on the Internet You’ll Probably Have Diabetes:  In the Nurses’ Health Study, women who said they drank one or more servings a day of a sugar-sweetened sof...

Most Powerful Antioxidants to Consume Everyday!

We all know now that Kangen water is the most powerful antioxidant we can consume everyday. It is twice more antioxidant than cod liver oil. Respectively, the 9.5 pH Kangen water's ORP (Oxidation Reducation Potential) is in between -800 and -400 mv as for cod liver oil's ORP it is about -200 mv. So instead of drinking gallons of cod liver oil everyday, why not drinking Kangen water?! http://www.checkoutkangen.com/files/Dr_Otto_Warburg.pdf In the same time, we'll protect the environment by not using plastic bottles. It comes fresh, ionized directly from your kitchen faucet! Who would have thought that such machine existed? Well the Japanese did it once again... Try it for yourself, the water is complimentary! Beware of knock-off machines. Buy the Japanese Enagic machine, it is the most reliable you will find. Soil Scientists Seek Sustainable Farm Policies, Practices

A group of leading scientists, economists and farmers is calling for a broad shift in federal policies to speed the development of farm practices that are more economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable. Writing in the journal  Science , they say current policies focus on the production of a few crops and a minority of farmers while failing to address farming’s contribution to global warming, biodiversity loss, natural resource degradation, and public health problems. “We have the technology and the science right now to grow food in sustainable ways, but we lack the policies and markets to make it happen,” says John Reganold, a Washington State University soil scientist and the Science  paper’s lead author. Starting in the late 1980s, Reganold pioneered several widely cited side-by-side comparisons showing organic farming systems were more earth-friendly than conventional systems while producing more nutritious and sometimes tastier food. His  Science ...

The Good News in Wisconsin That the Media Isn’t Covering

This week in Madison, Wis., has seen the largest protests since a "budget repair bill" virtually outlawing collective bargaining proposed by Gov. Scott Walker inspired an occupation of the state capitol building and massive street protests this past winter. Now, thousands are protesting Governor’s Walker drastic cuts to the social safety net and workers’ rights, contained in his 2011-2013 budgets. The budget would cut education funding  by $824 million  and Medicaid by $466 million . Walker is making these cuts despite  giving away nearly $320 million  in tax cuts to big corporations.    The Republican governor has also proposed allowing local governments to privatize their highway departments and hire private contractors to maintain state roads in Wisconsin. This upset many highway workers who would be stripped of their union representation if highway work was privatized in Wisconsin. Many claim not having union representation would make highways dr...

Nourishing the Planet TV: Rebuilding Communities with Livestock

In this week’s episode, research intern Matt Styslinger explains how small scale livestock can not only help to improve diets, livelihoods, and the environment, but also how they can help to maintain and rebuild communities. Livestock have the ability to not only provide milk and meat, which generates income, but they also  provide manure, which can be used as fertilizer as well as biogas for cooking.
