Toys... Eco-friendly

Interesting story and great website for those interested in being kind with the planet, whilst giving your children Toys to play with....

Rosie Hippo was born of a deep love for inspiring children's imagination and creativity through a carefully hand-selected collection of natural, earth-friendly toys. For 15 years, our mission has been to provide the highest quality natural toys to inspire and delight your children.
Rosie Hippo began in a quiet spot on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington, started by a young couple who had a passion for making beautiful natural toys for their own children. Each toy was built with love as they grew their business based on strong core values.
In 2008, inspired by my three-year-old son Ethan's delightful curiosity and my interest in child development, I purchased Rosie Hippo and I am thrilled to be the new owner! I am passionate about how children learn, grow and develop -- and about what types of toys and products can help encourage positive development of skills and values in all children. I believe that childhood is a time of excitement, enthusiasm, education and exploration, and that every child's learning and development is a special gift to be nurtured and enjoyed.
Although Rosie Hippo has moved from the West coast to the East coast, the company is still a family-owned and operated business and the vision has not changed -- to provide special, unique, high quality products to enrich the lives of children.
At Rosie Hippo, you will find beautifully handcrafted wooden toys, toys made from organic fabrics, toys from individuals, companies, villages and cooperatives around the world, and books and games that stimulate creativity and independent thought. We offer toys that we hope will become family heirlooms….toys that will evoke a sense of fun, curiosity and wonder for that special little one in your life. All of our toys are produced under conditions that are fair to workers and kind to our environment.
In this challenging, fast-paced world, many of us are looking for simpler times, simpler things, and more special moments with the people we love. The time spent seeing the world through a child's eyes and helping them to learn, grow, explore, and discover the world is just so precious. I hope Rosie Hippo can bring some wonderful treasures to your family for those special moments in your lives.
We hope to make a positive impact for our children and our planet, and hope you love our collection of toys and other products as much as we do!
Warmest Wishes,
Kim Bloom & the Rosie Hippo Family

Great News with Unilever!

Unilever commits to 75% sustainable packaging Unilever made a well-timed move to commit to sustainable sourcing of packaging in July with research studies showing consumers will change purchasing decisions to support this type of ethical commitment. Unilever published its sustainable paper and board packaging sourcing policy as part of its commitment to double the size of the business while reducing its environmental impact. The policy outlines the Unilever’s ambitious goal to work with its suppliers to source 75 per cent of its paper and board packaging from sustainably managed forests or from recycled material by 2015, rising to 100 per cent by 2020. The commitment makes Unilever the first global FMCG company to commit to sourcing all of its paper and board packaging from sustainably managed forests or recycled material within a clearly defined timeframe. For the company’s requirements for paper from virgin sources, preference will be given to supplies delivered through the Forest ...

Industry moves to sustainable palm oil

By Warren Beaumont There is global concern over palm oil being sourced from Indonesia and South East Asia where tropical forests have been cleared to make way for plantations, which have threatened the orangutan. This has led to major food retailers and suppliers to introduce plans to source sustainable palm oil or to ban palm oil in food. Nestle announced it had stopped sourcing palm oil from the Indonesian company Sinar Mas and was moving to meet high standards for sustainability. Unilever suspended purchases of palm oil from PT SMART, part of the Sinar Mas group. It followed allegations by Greenpeace that Sinar Mas, Indonesia’s biggest palm oil producer, had been responsible for widespread deforestation and peatland clearance. French supermarket giant Casino has announced that it will no longer use palm oil in 200 of its private label products by the end of 2010 and will eventually remove palm oil from all its food products, citing concerns over palm oil’s environmental impact and h...
